I think the salaf would say 'wa iyyak' [and to you too], if someone said to them Jazak Allah khayr [may Allah reward you with good].

They said this because they didn't want to have a favour from another Muslim which would be 'against' them on Judgment Day. So they would always ask for the favour of 'may Allah reward you' to be returned back.


Also, these verses were about the prisoners of the Quraysh at Badr, who the Muslims fed. They would give them better food [bread] and eat the cheaper food - dates. And they wouldn't accept thanks from them.
